Radio Hyperbole

So I was listening to 92.7 (the local Redskins/ESPN affiliate) this morning, and one of the blowhards said this:

"In a season of highs and lows for the Redskins on and off the field, surely the resignation of Joe Gibbs has to be the most shocking and unpredictable event."

Really? Most shocking?? Most unpredictable??? Zuh???????

If I had to set odds on the likelihood of certain events occurring before the season, I would have put it at this:

3-2: Redskins finishing .500 or better
2-1: Redskins making the playoffs
5-1: Redskins winning four straight to make the playoffs
10-1: Redskins making the NFC Championship game
25-1: Redskins making the Super Bowl
50-1: Redskins winning the Super Bowl

3-1: Joe Gibbs Retiring/Resigning
7,500-1: A Redskin murdered in the middle of the season

I think all these figures are accurate. I based them on bets I would have considered from both ways, and the Sean Taylor figure from the total number of professional athletes murdered in the last decade crossed with the overall homicide rate in America.

So, Mr. Bloviated Radio Talking Head, how can you tell me, with a straight face, that considering EVERYTHING, Joe Gibbs retiring was the most shocking thing that happened??

See, here's the thing: It's possible that this guy — who is an idiot — just completely forgot that Sean Taylor got murdered, and was a redskin.

I think it would be akin to this story:

http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=3186158

That woman (she's a Dukie, Dav!) forgot that Tiger Woods was black. (Technically Caublasian or whatever he said on Oprah, but let's get real, dude is black)

So I think it's possible that your radio man was just like, "oh man, Joe Gibbs, a septuagenarian who is having family issues and is probably tired as all fuck is quitting? Fiery rain from the Heavens!" and plumb forgot that the team's starting safety got shot and died in the course of his dismay. We media folk have extremely short memories.

On that topic, what was I talking about?

I think we give these radio guys too much flak, (or too much credit, depending on how cynical you want to be)for making crazy comments. They have to fill like 4 hours a day, and if any of us were asked to talk for 4 straight hours we would make rediculous comments as well.

Not only that, but the whole press core was obviously suprised because every radio station commented about being woken up and rushed into work because their producers were not expecting the announcement. Also, there was a report that Gibbs was not leaving just one day earlier by Thomas Boswell, the Post's head redskins guy. G

ive the poor guys a break, its 1 freaking comment.

Also, I believe the blowhard you are referring to was Sonny Jurgensson, and based on what I have heard of Sony on the radio, he is lucky to be making coherent sentenses, let alone salient points. He sounds like he swallowed his tounge, and the lack of oxygen is slowly killing his brain cells, so every word he utters is at his stupidest moment in life.
