Reds or Bengals, Who ya Got?

I recently read this article by Rick Reilly and found it fascinating. The premise is if every multiple sport city had to choose only one team to stay, who would they pick. Some are obvious like Hockey for Detroit and the Yankees for NYC. Some are controversial like the Bears for Chicago, sorry Mike, or the Ravens in Baltimore. But all in all it is a good read and is interesting to think about.

However he does not list Cincinnati.

So I put it to the great minds of TNH, what team stays in Cincy, the Reds or the Bengals?

The answer has to be the Reds. And I'm not just saying that because I'm not a Bengals fan.

Cincinnati has to be a baseball town, because the city so captures the essence of that sport. It is beyond "old school", it's "old time". They are both dinosaurs, but charming dinosaurs. Cincinnati folks would much rather pay $10 for a family bleacher seat than $5000 for a personal seat license.

And think about this: If the Bengals left, you could easily root for Indianapolis or Tennessee or St. Louis. None of those teams that are geographically close engender fierce hatred. On the flip side, can you imagine rooting for the Indians, Cardinals, or Cubs?

Don't forget, when the Bengals were trying to get PBS built, they threatened to move. A lot of people said "Fine. Bye." I wonder how many more would have agreed if they could have seen into the future.

One hundred percent, has to be the Reds. No doubt.

The Reds are the oldest professional sports franchise. Look at that. Not oldest in Cincinnati, not oldest in baseball. No. The oldest franchise ever. Five World Series Wins... Nine Pennants. Hell, they have a parade every year on Opening Day.

Put it this way. When the Bengals had their inaugural season, the Reds had been in town for 99 years.

Yeah, I don't think it's really a contest. Though right about now, both teams are taxing my goddamn patience.

On that note, expect a big update on the evening of Oct. 12, as Matt Hampton and special guest Dave Duran present another episode of "TNH Fieldtrips" the Meadowlands edition.

Jets-Bengals! Favre-Palmer! OchoCinco-...Laveranues Coles? All that and more!

I was going to include the fact that the Reds are the oldest professional franchise, but that organization left and went to Boston to become the Red Sox.

Out of curiosity, how is it that the Reds can make this claim? What's the rest of the story I'm missing?
