This is my baseball post.

1) Michael, we need some background on Dusty. Give us some perspective. I want to know what it's like to have this toothpick-chewer planting his butt on the home bench.

2) An interesting note about Hank and Hal Steinbrenner that I was thinking about this afternoon. Steinbrenner's daughter recently got divorced. That in itself is not that big a deal, except for the fact that her husband used to be an heir-apparent to a president of baseball operations-type position.
It's possible and even likely they'd been having marrital trouble for some time. Do we think the Boss hung in the saddle longer than he wanted to because he didn't want to risk turning over any portion of control to a man who he feared wouldn't be in his family permanently?

If that's the case, could we find quantifiable evidence that this "Carlo" Steinbrenner's marital habits were actually in some way affecting the performance of the team, by making George hold on even when his heart wasn't in it?

It's an interesting thing to think about. Did a bad marriage sink the Yanks for the better part of this decade?

Guys,

Phil and I spoke about this briefly...but here's what I know about Dusty/how I think things will go.

He is a players' manager. He is very hands off and lets things work themselves out. He puts his faith in his team, trusts they are men, and lets it play out.

He studies eastern philosophy, meditates and has a "zen" approach to baseball. I don't know if thats the best approach with a young Reds team.

Also, as Phil and I discussed, Dusty plays veterans. If faced with a Scott Hatteberg/Joey Votto decision (which he will), the old Dusty would go with Hatteberg. Time will tell if he learned his lesson in Chicago and will go with a more youthful approach.

Dusty got crushed by the media in Chicago. They were merciless and frankly, it was all down hill after the Bartman game. Dusty already has bad blood between him and Marty who sided with Stone and Caray when they disagreed with Dusty at the end of the 2004 season (which led to the subsequent firings of Stone and Caray). That should be an interesting topic in the future...the relationship between Marty and Dusty.

More ramblings...Dusty works his pitchers hard and long (TWSS) but he rode Kerry Wood and Prior too much and see what happened....I'm worried he will do the same with Harang (who has a high inning count already) and Homer Bailey.

All that being said, he's a good manager who got a bad rap in Chicago. He dealt with Sosa, the media, Bartman, the Curse (which lives) and came within 5 outs of the World Series and narrowly missed the playoffs the next year. He will bring experience and leadership and a big name to Cincy. I hope it works.

Wow. See, I had no clue he was big into zen. I'm actually really excited about that because I think everything that Mackanin did right this year had to do with taking his hands off the wheel and going with the flow, which is a very zen way to manage. I dig it. Now I'm excited. THank you, Michael

On point 2, I have a few thoughts.

First, how terrible must the Boss's daughter have been to justify the divorce? I mean, Steve, seriously. You are the Boss's favorite son (more so than his two real children) and you stand to inherit the reins of the most preeminent franchise in sports. So what if you have to give in and cuddle a bit more at home.

Second, I don't think this issue has been the problem with the Yankees in this millenium. Steinbrenner would have transfered the ownership to his children in a trust, perhaps Swindal would have continued his role as President of the YES network, but he would have been removed if the divorce became public.

I think I'm going to try and cover this in more detail with a post of its own, but I do want to point out how interesting a hire Dusty Baker is for the Reds.

Everything we have read and seen the last couple months with this team dealt prospects and young players on the rise in the organization. A youth movement, it appeared, was about to take place in Cincy. Enter Dusty and Bob Castellini. This is a win now move. Plain and simple. That means the Reds are either going to spend big in Free Ageny (unlikely due to many factors), or that they are about to cash in some of their touted prospects for established MLB talent. There will be no big youth movement. Winning is the number one priority for the first in a long time (not just lip service to winning). This may all end in spectacularly bad fashion, but at least the Reds are deciding to man up, push their chips in, and actually play some baseball. Should make for a very interesting Hot Stove this winter.
